New GNSS and Geological Data From the Indo‐Burman Subduction Zone Indicate Active Convergence on Both a Locked Megathrust and the Kabaw Fault

The Indo-Burma subduction zone is a highly oblique system where the Indian plate converging with Eurasian plate. How strain partitioned between interface and upper Kabaw Fault, whether megathrust locked active of convergence that can generate great earthquakes are ongoing debates. Here, we use data from total 68 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations, including newly installed stations across Fault compute an updated horizontal vertical GNSS velocity field. We correct rates for fluctuating seasonal signals by accounting elastic response monsoon water on crust. model geodetic inverting 11,000 planar non-planar fault geometries two geologically viable structural interpretations construct field geological data, considering basin-scale wedge-fault crustal-scale reverse fault. demonstrate locked, at rate mm/yr, capable hosting >8.2 Mw events. also show accommodating strike-slip motion mm/yr mm/yr. Our interpretation geological, geophysical, datasets indicates structure actively absorbs portion previously ascribed to megathrust. This reveals unrecognized seismic hazard associated slightly reduces estimated posed in region.
